The Teacher, The Resilient Spirit, The Proud Grandmother
My name is Victoria Rodgers, though most people call me Vicky. I grew up as an only child, which fostered a close bond with my parents and encouraged me to develop strong friendships.
My education at Leavington College for Girls provided a solid foundation for my future. After school, I went to university and trained as a teacher, spending many rewarding years in the classroom. My last teaching position was at St. Joseph’s Convent in Kenilworth, a wonderful school where my daughter also thrived academically.
My childhood was filled with unique experiences, like travelling to Paris with my father, who had a business there. My academic interests leaned towards the sciences, although my art teachers saw potential in me. A memorable influence was my headmistress, who shared her experiences of living in India through ‘The Jungle Book’.
Drama and school plays were among my fondest memories. I particularly enjoyed productions like ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ and ‘The Tempest, Androcles and the Lion’. Despite not having a Girls Guides nearby, I found joy in the St. John Ambulance Cadets, thanks to my mother’s resourcefulness.
I began my teaching career in my twenties, focusing on sciences and occasionally English, thanks to my love for drama. I married Roger, a brilliant man I met at a quiz night. Our marriage brought two wonderful children, a son and a daughter. Sadly, Roger lost his fight against Leukaemia, but his intelligence and kindness left a lasting impact on our family.
Years later, I found a second chance of happiness with Stan, whom I met through lawn bowls. After facing some health issues following a brain haemorrhage and being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Stan and I moved into an assisted living apartment at Richmond Villages with wonderful views and where we could benefit from the outstanding care the staff provide.
After 15 years of being together, Stan sadly passed away, and following a hip replacement at the hospital I moved into the Bupa Care Home at Richmond Villages so that I could get more support. Initially hesitant, I grew to immensely appreciate the companionship and the wide range of activities that the community offered.
My greatest pride is my family. My granddaughter Darcy’s flute performance at Richmond Villages remains a cherished memory. The joy and talent of my children and grandchildren are my greatest successes.
At 80, I believe in looking forward and embracing life’s changes. Richmond Villages has given me a reason to keep going, with its welcoming environment and caring staff. My advice to others is to find joy in every moment and never give up on life’s opportunities.
