Richmond Villages Willaston Launched New Pen Pal Scheme with Local Nursery
Residents at Richmond Villages Willaston have been building new friendships across generations after a heartwarming letter-writing project launched to mark School Month in September.
15 residents living at the Bupa care home wrote thoughtful letters and cards to local children at Little Steps Nursery, sharing kind messages, words of encouragement and stories about their lives and experiences. 15 letters were also sent to residents living in Barony Lodge Care Home in Nantwich, helping to build connections between different communities and encourage friendship.
The project aligns with the themes of School Month by encouraging learning from one another, celebrating communication, and bringing different generations together in a positive and meaningful way. This helps reduce social isolation, build new relationships and strengthen connections across the wider community.
It gave residents the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, reminisce about their own school days and childhood memories, and express their creativity through personalised letters and decorations.
Residents took great pride in sharing their stories, advice and kind words with the nursery children and fellow care home residents. Many are now looking forward to receiving responses and continuing their new friendships.
Jean, a resident at Richmond Village Willaston, said: “I have really enjoyed taking part in the letter-writing project. It brought back happy memories of my own school days and gave me the opportunity to share some of my experiences with others. It was lovely to think that someone else might enjoy reading my letter, and I’m looking forward to hearing back from them.”
Nicky Vaughan, Village Manager at Richmond Village Willaston, commented: “The letter-writing project has been a wonderful way for our residents to connect with people of different generations and share their experiences with the wider community. It has been lovely to see how much thought and creativity residents have put into their letters and cards.”
“They have taken great pride in sharing their stories, advice, and kind words with nursery children and fellow care home residents, giving them a sense of purpose and achievement. Communication and connection are so important for wellbeing, and we hope these new pen pal friendships will continue to grow.”
The activity was organised by the Richmond Village Willaston activities team, with residents and family members also taking part.
