When Rosemary moved to Richmond Villages Letcombe Regis in 2025, she was looking for more than simply a new home. Following the loss of her husband, Michael, in 2014, she had continued living alone in a large four-bedroom detached house in nearby Steventon. While she valued her independence, maintaining a large property increasingly felt overwhelming, and she found herself becoming isolated. 

Today, Rosemary describes her move to Letcombe Regis as life-changing. "I was beginning to be isolated and lonely in a big house. Having people around has got me back into being my old self, more confident, more willing to go off and try things." 

Finding the Right Community 

Rosemary first discovered Richmond Villages Letcombe Regis during an open day several years before her move. The village immediately stood out to her because it offered something she had not found elsewhere. While she explored other retirement developments, she felt they lacked the sense of community she was seeking. "This has an atmosphere of friendliness and pleasantness. It's a village, so people mix with everybody else. That appealed to me much more than just a retirement flat." 

Although it took time to make the decision to move, Rosemary never forgot the feeling she experienced when she first visited. "I kind of fell in love with the place." 

A Renewed Sense of Wellbeing 

Since joining the village, Rosemary says her overall wellbeing has improved dramatically. Free from the pressures of maintaining a large home and surrounded by a supportive community, she feels more relaxed, secure and able to enjoy retirement fully. "It's made me feel much more secure, much happier, more confident, and generally I love being here." 

The impact has been significant. Rosemary believes that without Letcombe Regis she would be far lonelier and more stressed. "I would be lonely without living here, and more stressed. Therefore, I wouldn't be able to enjoy retirement so much." 

The Power of Resident-Led Community 

A defining moment in Rosemary's first few days at the village came through a resident-led initiative called Friday Friends. On only her second day living at Richmond Villages Letcombe Regis, Rosemary attended the weekly social gathering, where residents come together informally to chat and enjoy each other's company. A member of the team, Claire Wheeler, personally accompanied Rosemary and introduced her to other residents. "She took me there and introduced me. I kind of never looked back from that really." 

The group continues to play an important role in helping residents build friendships and feel connected. "New people come along and everybody makes them very welcome. It's a very good way to get to know people informally." For Rosemary, this culture of welcome and inclusion epitomises village life. 

Supporting Passions and Purpose 

In addition to the social benefits, living at Richmond Villages Letcombe Regis has enabled Rosemary to devote more time to one of her lifelong passions: art. 

Her artistic journey began when her father taught her to draw as a child. Over the years she developed her skills through evening classes and later completed a Foundation Diploma at Abingdon & Witney College. Art became especially important following her husband's death, providing both solace and expression during difficult times. "Art has been something I could always turn to." 

Since moving to Letcombe Regis, Rosemary has found more time and freedom to pursue her creativity. Recently, she exhibited her work alongside a friend at Wantage Museum. Residents and team members actively supported her achievement, attending the exhibition and offering encouragement and feedback. "Quite a lot went down to have a look and made encouraging and meaningful comments." 

Celebrating Achievement 

The village has gone a step further in recognising Rosemary's talent by displaying some of her artwork within the Lodge. The opportunity arose after team members Claire and Amy visited her exhibition and suggested showcasing her work for others to enjoy. "I was really flattered. That was really, really nice." The display not only celebrates Rosemary's artistic achievements but also highlights Richmond Villages' commitment to recognising residents as individuals with unique talents, interests and stories. 

Thriving, Not Just Retiring 

Looking back on her first year at Letcombe Regis, Rosemary reflects most on the friendships she has built and the supportive environment she has found. 

"What stands out most is how lovely it is living here, with so many people I know now and like and respect." The move has enabled her to rediscover confidence, pursue her passions and enjoy a sense of belonging that she had begun to lose while living alone. 

For Rosemary, Richmond Villages Letcombe Regis is far more than a retirement community. It is a place where residents are supported to thrive. "Having people around has brought back my confidence."
