Richmond Villages cycle 136km for Age UK charity
A team of cyclists from Richmond Villages in Gloucestershire participated in a charity bike ride on Thursday 21st August, named ‘Tour de Richmond Villages’ and raised a £876 for Age UK.
The 5 participants cycled an impressive 136 kilometres between three retirement villages in one day. Starting at Richmond Villages Wood Norton, then on to Richmond Villages Cheltenham, through the scenic hills to Richmond Villages Painswick before looping back to Wood Norton.
Derek Broughman, the regional operations director for Richmond Villages, and James Culley, the village manager at Wood Norton, were the driving forces behind this initiative to raise money for Age UK, a charity close to their hearts.
Derek Broughman said: “I am very proud of our entire team of cyclists and our colleagues, residents, friends and family who supported us on Thursday. It was a great day of community spirit, and I am so pleased we raised £876 for Age UK.”
Richmond Villages hosted a fan fair at each retirement village for the community to support the cyclists, enjoy a refreshment station and encourage donations.
Age UK is the leading charity for older people in the UK. They provide support, information and advice to the older generation. Age UK operates roughly 120 local branches; Richmond Villages are supporting Age UK Gloucestershire and Wyvern.
Jude Henderson, director of services of Age UK Wyvern, said: “We are thrilled to receive this generous donation from Richmond Villages. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the staff involved in the cycle, especially the cyclists themselves whose achievements made this possible. This incredible donation will go towards much needed services for older people, including social events to combat loneliness, digital cafes to help older people access the online world and support for people struggling with energy costs.”
Jane Shute, head of fundraising and communications at Age UK Gloucestershire, added: “We are incredibly grateful to the team at Richmond Villages for taking on this epic challenge in support of Age UK Gloucestershire. Their fabulous efforts will help us continue our work helping older people across the county, ensuring they feel supported and connected. Fundraising by supporters like Richmond Villages make a real difference and is so important for our charity as it provides vital funds for our work. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and to all those who donated – your support truly matters.”
