Veteran lights Nantwich's official VE Day beacon

This year, Richmond Villages Nantwich honoured VE Day’s 80th anniversary with a moving tribute to 100-year-old resident and World War II veteran, Dennis Eyres, who was invited to light the town’s official VE Day beacon in the heart of Nantwich.

Staff and residents gathered to commemorate the occasion, which was made even more special by Dennis’ remarkable contribution to the ceremony. Though now a wheelchair user, Dennis stood with assistance for the national anthem as tears streamed down his face.

Dennis, a proud former fighter engineer on a Lancaster Bomber, served with distinction during the Second World War, taking on roles in gunnery, navigation, and wireless operation. On VE Day in 1945, he was stationed in Gutersloh, Germany.

Village Manager of Richmond Villages Nantwich, Lynne Griffin, commented: “Dennis symbolises the courage and quiet dignity of a generation who gave everything. He thanked the staff for bringing him – but it is Dennis to whom the nation owes thanks.”

Dennis’ journey continues to inspire all who know him. As he approaches his 101st birthday on 29th June, residents and staff at Richmond Villages Nantwich are planning to celebrate this incredible milestone with a special event, surrounded by his family, friends, and fellow residents.

Dennis added: “I am incredibly grateful to be recognised and appreciated, it was a very special day and brought back a lot of memories.”

In addition to his VE Day role, Dennis has also been invited to light Nantwich’s beacon for VJ Day, commemorating the end of the Second World War in the Pacific. His presence at both events stands as a living legacy of a time that shaped the world.
