A Remarkable Story from Our Resident, Patricia Russell

At Richmond Villages Wood Norton, we are proud to share the extraordinary stories of our inspirational residents. Patricia Russell, a former Wren (Women’s Royal Naval Service, WRNS) whose service during the Second World War continues to inspire us.

Patricia turned 100 last weekend, she also appeared in a special BBC interview ahead of VE Day, where she reflected on her incredible role at DREM airfield (HMS Nighthawk) in East Lothian, Scotland. In 1945, at just 20 years old, she found herself being part of history, tasked with responsibilities that few her age could ever imagine.

As a driver at the base, Patricia transported senior German High Command officers who had arrived in Luftwaffe Junkers Ju52 aircraft to surrender Norwegian forces and deliver critical naval intelligence. Patricia also played a role in helping to establish the ground-breaking DREM Lighting System, which dramatically improved the safety of night-time landings for Spitfire pilots.

Through her vivid memories, Patricia offers a rare and personal glimpse into one of the most pivotal moments in modern history. Her quiet courage, resilience, and amazing contributions are a testament to the many heroes of that era.

We are immensely proud to celebrate Patricia’s story here at Richmond Villages Wood Norton. Her story is not only a reminder of the past but also an inspiration for future generations.
