5 ways to combat loneliness in retirement

Transitioning into retirement is often a significant point in a person’s life. There is often newfound freedom and time for leisure, however, it can also bring challenges, hurdles to overcome and, possibly, loneliness. There may no longer be work related interactions, social circles may get smaller and there may be a lesser sense of purpose. Although, if a conscious effort is made to combat loneliness, then retirement can be a very fulfilling experience. Ways to do this include:

1. Focus on personal goals and growth:

Taking the extra time you have on your hands and putting it in to something productive can be a great use of time. Why not learn something new? Is there something that you have always wanted to do, but haven’t found the time? Well, retirement is the perfect opportunity for that! There are several workshops and classes for beginners that can be attended. Whether it be learning how to play an instrument, a new language, or learning how to paint, this is a great way to socially interact with others and enrich your days. Richmond villages offer an amazing timetable of events across all of the villages for residents to get involved with, improving their lifestyle and meeting others.

Setting goals and staying active is another great way to pursue growth and open doors to meet others. What goals would offer purpose to your day? Could it be visiting somewhere new, reading every day, working on balance and strength. Whatever it may be, this will help towards a fulfilling retirement.

2. Foster social connections:

Socials circles don’t have to shrink as you age, there are many ways to foster new social connections in retirement. Joining clubs and organisations, for example, will allow you to meet people who have similar interests, such as book clubs or volunteering groups. The like-minded individuals you may meet could become lifelong friends.

3. Self-Care:

Practicing mindfulness can be a great way to keep a positive mindset and alleviate any feelings of isolation during retirement. Staying active is also very important for both physical and mental health and taking part in exercise classes can also be a great way to meet people.

4. Strengthening relationships:

Prioritise communicating with friends and family, whether you live far or nearby to loved ones, check in with each other. Call, make regular visits, and share happy memories online. Reconnecting with old friends is another way to combat loneliness, rekindling old connections such as with work colleagues and school friends.

5. Get involved with the community:

Where possible, getting involved with the local community can be a great opportunity to form meaningful connections. Whether that be community events, local initiatives, or gatherings within the neighbourhood. Retirement living should offer a fresh slate and new beginning, full of possibilities. Being proactive and stepping out of a comfort zone to form new bonds will be enriching and highlight what retirement has to offer.

“My mother purchased a property at Richmond two years ago and I have to say the place is amazing. The staff are welcoming and my mum loves using the spa. Nothing is too much trouble and I hope mum has many more happy years there as she's made a lot of new friends via the activities that Richmond run.” – Google review.
