'The Queen of the Cotswolds', Painswick is set high on a spur between two valleys a few miles north of Stroud. It is an area of outstanding beauty and the town itself is built almost entirely of the honey coloured stone the Cotswolds are so famous for.

Wander around and you discover a maze of twisting narrow streets filled with restaurants, cafés and galleries, housed in the many beautifully preserved buildings. New Street was built as long ago as 1428 when the wool industry began to prosper. Here you'll find reputedly the oldest building in England to contain a post office. St Mary's Church is also notable for its beautiful church yard filled with perfectly clipped yew trees and the Rococo gardens at the edge of town are a rare survivor of a brief period in English garden design.

With its easy connections to Stroud, Cheltenham, Gloucester and beyond, this wonderful and historic town and indeed the whole area, is filled with things to do and see. Surrounded as it is, by such spectacular scenery, it's easy to see why it makes such a superb retirement location.
