Poppies and Packing for Richmond Nantwich

1st November 2015

Poppies and Packing for Richmond Nantwich

Residents and staff from Richmond Village Nantwich will be swapping their usual surroundings for
the aisles of a local supermarket as they take part in the Royal British Legions Annual Poppy Appeal.

Last year, the local branch of the RBL approached Sainsburys Nantwich to ask if they knew
anyone who would help in their fundraising efforts during the weeks running up to Remembrance Day. Olwyn Payton from the store immediately suggested the Village and the following week a group of volunteers sold poppies and packed bags raising over £850. This year, the residents and staff are hoping to raise even more!

Village spokesperson Nicola Morgan-Parker explained “We have always been delighted to
support the community work that Sainsburys are involved with; to also be
helping such a fantastic cause as the RBL Poppy Appeal is something we are all
delighted to do! It is wonderful that we have so many volunteers; one lady has
even offered to be there for the whole day.”

Residents and staff will be at the store on Sunday 1st November.

Children bring Halloween the Bede Village Care Centre

4th November 2015

Children bring Halloween the Bede Village Care Centre

A group of children visited Richmond Bede Village Care Centre last week for ’trick or treating’.  The children enjoyed an afternoon of pumpkin carving but to add to the delights, residents gave them sweets and goodies, apple bobbing games and ‘wrap the mummy.’ The lounges had been decorated throughout in Halloween and horror decorations, and the children played games which kept the residents entertained.

Charlie, one of the visiting children, said “The game ‘Boo’ (pin the ‘boo’ tail on the ghost) was really fun, especially when I won a spider... not a real one of course!”

Activity co-ordinator Denise Gilbert said ‘the residents and children had a great afternoon, it’s wonderful when we’re able to do events with the community.’

Keeping warm this winter!

8th November 2015

Keeping warm this winter!

The government's advice on getting ready for winter aims to reduce cold-related illness and deaths. Key tips include:

Try to keep your home warm. Keep your main living room at around 18-21°C (65-70°F). If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before you go to sleep. You can also use a hot-water bottle or electric blanket (but not both at the same time) to keep warm while you're in bed.

Eat well. Food is a vital source of energy, which helps to keep your body warm. Try to make sure that you have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day and keep active in the home if you can.

Wrap up warm, inside and out. Layer your clothing to stay warm and wear shoes with a good grip if you need to go outside. If possible, stay inside during a cold period if you have heart or respiratory problems.

Check on older neighbours or relatives to make sure they're safe and well. Make sure they're warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don't need to go out during very cold weather. If you're worried about a relative or an elderly neighbour, contact your local council or ring the Age UK helpline on 0800 00 99 66.
