As we all know, memory impairment problems doesn't just affect the sufferer, it affects their nearest and dearest and everyone around them. What happens, though, when dementia affects one partner in a marriage? It may mean they eventually have to live apart. Even the best care homes cannot make up for the heartache and sense of loss this causes. A Dementia Apartment at Richmond Village now means couples can remain living together.
At Richmond Villages we are all too aware of the need for alternative care options. One of our fundamental principals is to free people from this worry.
Our Dementia Apartments are in an area of the village which is self-contained and offers the variety of day space, activity space and communal areas necessary for the additional care and support required.
Furniture in the communal areas include soft seating, sets of drawers for 'rummaging', sensory lighting, wall hangings and all the other stimulus known to help those with memory impairment.
There is a room for crafts as well as open plan spaces with more soft seating where people can spend quiet time away from other activities. The servery provides residents with lunch, plus drinks and snacks throughout the day.
Subject to a thorough assessment of current and future needs, living in an apartment in this new environment will mean couples, where only one partner suffers from dementia, can still live together.
As in all Serviced Apartments, meals, laundry, cleaning and utilities are included in the apartment fee. In addition, the dementia support package includes an hour of one-to-one assistance tailored to the residents' needs, plus a 3-hour daily session of communal care activities either morning or afternoon. For a supplement, residents may attend both morning and afternoon sessions.
All of this means that partners of dementia care residents will have a break and be able to do as they please, without worry and guilt, as they know that their loved one is receiving the best possible care.
They will be able take advantage of a whole host of social opportunities and activities that the rest of the village has to offer and use the village transport for shopping trips and other excursions.
